The push-your-luck card-drafting game Port Royal will finally find its way to America in a new English edition by Steve Jackson Games, releasing in August.

In this card game by Alexander Pfister (Mombasa, Broom Service), the players are pirates/merchants in a Caribbean port trying to earn glory and influence by looting ships, hiring citizens of the port, and completing missions.  Each turn, players choose how many cards to draw, using a push-your-luck mechanic.  Then the player takes cards depending on their luck before the other players have a chance to buy the leftovers.

Originally released in 2013 as Handler der Karibik in Austria, Port Royal achieved critical success when it earned the Wiener Spiele Akademie Award for Best Game Designer of 2013 as well as Finland’s 2015 Vouden Peli Voittaja Award for Best Family Game in 2015.

Steve Jackson’s version of the game will feature new cover art, and comes with 120 cards.  It can be played by 2 to 5 players, ages 8 and up, and takes less than an hour to play.  MSRP is $19.95.

Earlier this month, Steve Jackson Games’ announced a new program for retailers that want to order product direct (see “Steve Jackson Games Offers Retailers Direct Sales”).
