UK game publisher Cubicle 7 is double-dipping into Games Workshop’s iconic Warhammer setting with the announcement of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Roleplaying Game, which will release next year.
The new game will be based on GW’s reboot of its fantasy miniatures game, launched in 2015. The new setting has proven popular with fantasy miniatures fans, climbing to fourth place on ICv2’s list of top miniatures games (see “Top 5 Non-Collectible Miniature Games--Fall 2016”) and spawning a steady flow of models and source material.
Cubicle 7 is hoping that the grim fantasy setting will prove popular with role players as well. The “Mortal Realms are fascinating, highly evocative and hold endless possibilities for roleplaying,” Cubicle 7 CEO Dominic McDowall said in the announcement.
The Warhammer Age of Sigmar Roleplaying Game should not be confused with the recently announced fourth edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, also from Cubicle 7 and based on the “classic” Warhammer fantasy setting (see “Cubicle 7 to Revive ‘Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay’”). In addition to very different settings, the two games are built on different rules sets and will not be cross-compatible.
The first titles for the new game have not yet been announced. Cubicle 7 plans to begin publishing Warhammer Age of Sigmar in 2018.
