First Second has added another kid-friendly comics line. The Maker Comics series pairs visual instruction and narrative to help readers embrace their do-it-yourself side. The line launches in 2019 and is being edited by Robyn Chapman. Like First Second’s Science Comics (see “Kids Comics Round-Up: Comics Are For Kids Again”), Maker Comics will come from various creators.

The word “maker” refers to contemporary do-it-yourself culture, which frequently incorporates technology into traditional handcrafts. Make, a magazine that is at the forefront of the movement, isn’t affiliated with the series, but likely influenced it. Make took a look at preview art from the series, and identified some of the topics and creators:

  • Falynn Koch (Science Comics): baking
  • Chris Schweizer (Crogan Adventures): car maintenance
  • Sarah Meyer: costuming
  • Alexis Frederick-Frost (Adventures in Cartooning): gardening
  • JP Coovert (Charlie Joe Jackson): cartooning
  • Colleen AF Venable (Guinea PIG, Pet Shop Private Eye) and Kathryn Hudson (Trolls): electronics and robotics

Each volume in the series will present several projects related to the topic. The books on baking and car maintenance will kick off the series.
