With a domestic box office take of $338 million, Finding Nemo is quite likely to be 2003's box office champion, but in just two weeks the film will have earned more on video than it did in months in the theaters. According to Variety during its first week of release North American consumers purchased 17 million copies of the film. The current popularity of the DVD format can be gauged by the fact that 13.5 million of the 17 million copies of the film were on disk. Add in another $11 million in rental revenue during the first week and industry experts estimate that Finding Nemo brought in $300 million during its first week of release on video. Nemo video sales will not only shortly surpass its box office total, it is a lock to become the best-selling DVD of all time, a title currently held by Spider-Man and the first LOTR film, which have each sold a total of 14 million DVDs. Disney's Buena Vista Home Video subsidiary has shipped some 25 million copies of Finding Nemo to retailers, which should provide some clue as to where the final tally for the film will end up.
