Geoff Johns is segueing from his post as President and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment to full-time writing and production, the company announced. Jim Lee, currently DC Entertainment co-Publisher, will take on the role of Chief Creative Officer. Dan Didio will continue to serve as co-Publisher with Lee. This puts Lee on a track to be more involved in DC’s presence in other media, while Didio remains focused on comics and graphic novel publishing. No announcement was made with regard to the President role.
The announcements were made by Thomas Gewecke, Chief Digital Officer and Executive Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, who is serving as DC’s interim head in the wake of Diane Nelson’s exit (see "Diane Nelson Out at DC").
Johns is entering into an exclusive writer / producer deal with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment to produce content including comic books, TV programs and films based on DC properties as well as new IPs. Johns is launching his own production company, Mad Ghost Productions, under which TV and movie content will be created.
Johns will also write and develop new comic projects under "The Killing Zone," a new pop-up label focusing on new and lesser-known DC characters. A Shazam! series written by Johns will launch this fall. He will also continue writing the chronically late Doomsday Clock illustrated by Gary Frank, and Three Jokers illustrated by Jason Fabok.
As part of the new deal, Johns will write and produce Warner Bros. Pictures adaptation of Green Lantern Corps, his bestselling DC series. Johns has co-writer and executive producer creds on Aquaman which is due in theaters this December (see "Best in Shows--Q4 2018"). The upcoming Shazam! feature is based on his original graphic novel (see "Best in Shows--Q2 2019").
Johns has already co-developed, written, and executive produced Titans, which will be DC Universe’s first original series (see "'The Walking Dead' Ratings Slip, Hot Trailer for 'Fahrenheit 451,' Animated 'Rocketeer' and 'Moon Girl,' 'Sabrina' and 'Titans' Casting"). He wrote the Titans episode Doom Patrol, which is now spinning off into its own series (see "DC Universe Goes on 'Doom Patrol'").
Johns was named Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment in 2010 (see "New DC Executive Team Announced"), and elevated to President in 2016.
