The City is a card game about building cities designed by Tom Lehmann, the creator of Race for the Galaxy, Favor of the Pharaoh, and Roll Through the Ages: Iron Age. In The City, players are developers constructing buildings such as luxury homes, malls, and airports. The cards in a player’s hand are not only the buildings that they can build, but also the resources that the player spends to build them. Points are awarded for the combinations of buildings a player constructs, which can also provide the player income in the form of card draws. The player with the most points when any player reaches 50 points wins the game.
This new edition of the game features a few small changes to the previous version, including a new “Factory” card, five modified cards, and the addition of victory point chips to help speed up scoring.
The City includes 112 cards, 12 survey markers, and 87 victory point chips. It is intended for 2 to 5 players, ages 10 and up, and takes about half an hour to play. MSRP is $29.99.Eagle-Gryphon is seeking funding for the production of The City through a Kickstarter campaign that has attracted $25,376 from 651 backers as of this writing (an average of $38.98 per backer). The campaign has a retailer-only backer option, which also gives retailers the opportunity to order the Kickstarter-exclusive Expanded City expansion. Backer fulfillment is scheduled for November, with release into the trade to follow.
This summer, the company will release Vital Lacerda’s Escape Plan (see “Vital Lacerda Has an ‘Escape Plan’”).
