The publisher Abrams has released its Fall 2019 list, which includes four new titles in the ComicArts imprint.

The most prominent Fall title is the anthology Drawing Power, edited by underground comics pioneer Diane Noomin (see “Abrams to Publish Survival-Themed ‘Drawing Power’”), but the other planned books cater to a variety of tastes.

Parable of the Sower is an adaptation of the Octavia Butler novel by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. This is a follow up to their adaptation of Butler’s Kindred, which won an Eisner Award for best adaptation. Kindred dealt with the past, as the heroine was repeatedly pulled back in time to the 19th century, but Parable of the Sower is set in the future, the year 2024 to be exact, a time when environmental and economic devastation have led to chaos. Lauren Olamina, the heroine, is a preacher’s daughter who lives with her family in a gated community, but when the walls are breached, she must draw on her own inner resources to make her way through this new world. The 272-page, full-color hardcover is scheduled for January 13, 2020, and will have an MSRP of $24.99.

Commute, by Erin Williams, takes place as the author travels to and from work. On her daily commute, she encounters the strange and the familiar and has time to reflect on her personal history of alcoholism, addiction, and recover as well as her sexual experiences. These reflections in turn raise questions of transgression, sexual objectification, and the region between consent and assault. The 304-page, full-color hardcover is due out on October 8, 2019, with an MSRP of $24.99.

The Art of Nothing: 25 Years of Mutts and the Art of Patrick McDonnell celebrates a quarter-century of McDonnell’s syndicated comic with a collection of classic strips about Mooch the cat, Earl the dog, and the varied cast of animals and insects they that inhabit their world. The book also includes unpublished strips, proposals, and concept art, along with a career-spanning interview of McDonnell by cartoonist Lynda Barry and an introduction by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle. The 240-page, full-color hardcover has a release date of October 15, 2019, and an MSRP of $40.00.

Abrams will also release a paperback edition of Showtime at the Apollo, by writer Ted Fox and artist James Otis Smith, a history of the legendary Harlem theater (see “Review: ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ HC”). The hardcover was released in January 2019; the 240-page book has two-color illustrations, and the paperback will be released on February 25, 2020, with an MSRP of $18.99.
