Matthew Sterling, who was charged with multiple felonies after going to Phoenix Comicon in 2017 heavily armed and with bad intent, has been found "guilty except insane," and sentenced to 25 years in a state mental institution, according to Phoenix New Times. If he’s found mentally competent at any time during his sentence, he’ll be transferred to a state prison for the remainder of his time.
Sterling was arrested at the Phoenix Convention Center armed with three handguns, a shotgun, a knife, ammunition, and other handheld weapons. He had posted his intent to kill original Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank on social media (see "Armed Suspect Arrested at Phoenix Comicon").
He was convicted of attempted first degree murder, attempted aggravated assault, aggravated assault of an officer, resisting arrest, misconduct with body armor, and carrying a weapon into a prohibited place.
The convention has since been renamed Phoenix Fan Fusion and has been held without incident since Sterling’s arrest.
