Caliber Comics has announced it will publish the graphic novel The Lincoln Brigade, which tells the true story of Oliver Law, a Black American veteran who traveled to Spain to fight the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War.  Written by Pablo Durá, with art by Carles Esquembre, The Lincoln Brigade will be available in Fall 2020.

Law was part of the legendary Abraham Lincoln Brigade, a group of about 3,000 American fighters who were allied with the Popular Front against the Fascist General Francisco Franco and his forces.  At a time when the U.S. armed forces were still segregated, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade was not, and Law, one of 85 Black members, played a leadership role.

Law was born in Texas in 1899 and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 19, serving in a segregated regiment on the Mexican border.  After his discharge in 1925, Law worked at a number of jobs and eventually became an activist for workers' rights and a member of the Communist Party.  In 1935 he was arrested at a demonstration protesting Italy's occupation of Ethiopia.  Law traveled to Spain in January 1937 and was immediately put in charge of a machine gun company.  He briefly assumed command of the Lincoln Battalion and led it in the Battle of Brunete. He was killed in action in 1937.
