A new company is launching Comic Tags, collectible cards with unique codes that allow the user to download a comic in PDF format. The cards are attached to hangable backers that are folded like minicomics and include art from the comic. The first batch is being launched in partnership with Scout Comics and includes eight graphic novels: The Mall, White Ash, Mindbender, Stabbity Bunny, It Eats What Feeds It, Gutt Ghost, Solar Flare, and The Source. All are priced at $6.99 apiece; in general, Comic Tags will be priced lower than physical trades and graphic novels.

The partners behind Comic Tags are James Haick III and Don Handfield, both of Scout Comics. Despite their affiliation, Comic Tags is a separate company, and more publishers are expected to sign on in the future. The cards and folders can be tailored for different publishers’ requirements and may include custom variants, holographic chase cards, limited edition foil and metal cards, and limited edition and artist-signed variant covers.

Handfield said in a statement that he believes digital comic sales are as low as they are (8-9% of total sales) because readers want something physical that they can collect. On the other hand, Haick points out, as a lifelong collector, he has a house full of comics that are not readily accessible because they are stored in boxes. Comic Tags are designed to resolve both problems, combining the easy access of digital comics with the collector’s desire for a physical product.

Retailers who want to carry the tags should contact the company directly.
