Video Business' Scott Hettrick is reporting that THX 1138 will get a theatrical release in 20 cities, mostly in digital theaters, beginning September 10th to support the release of a new DVD collector's edition.  The digitally enhanced 'director's cut' will premiere at the Guggenheim Museum in New York on September 9th.  Director George Lucas and producer Francis Ford Coppola are expected to attend.

The main differences in the new version of the film, according to the article, will be new digitally enhanced backgrounds and crowd scenes.

The new two-disk DVD set will street September 14th.  Bonus material will include a new documentary on American Zoetrope by Gary Leva, including interviews with Lucas, Coppola, THX 1138 star Robert Duvall, Martin Scorsese, and John Milius, among others; the original student short by Lucas that was the basis for the movie; audio commentaries by Lucas and Walter Munch; a documentary on the production of the movie; and more.
