Writer Garth Ennis and artist Jacen Burrows are teaming up for an eight-issue series about an ancient horror hunting down corrupt cops in New York City. The Ribbon Queen, launching in July from AWA, is set in the aftermath of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and follows an NYPD homicide detective, Amy Sun, who uncovers a corrupt unit within the department. While they may be preying on innocent citizens, though, something is preying on them: An ancient spirit bent on revenge is hunting down the abusive cops and literally tearing them to ribbons. The first issue will be released on July 26, 2023, with covers by Declan Shalvey and Fay Dalton.

“This one goes all the way back to an idea I had when I was just a kid, and I’ve been waiting a long time to tell the story of The Ribbon Queen,” Ennis said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “It was a question of refining the themes and creating the appropriate characters and setting for the narrative—and, of course, finding the right artist. I worked with Jacen on Wormwood, Crossed, and The Punisher, so I know he’s got a bit of a nose for the nasty: he really is the perfect collaborator for this dark and bloody tale."

Ennis is the creator of Preacher and The Boys, and AWA is adapting his earlier series, Marjorie Finnegan: Temporal Criminal, into a movie (see “Garth Ennis in Development”). Burrows teamed up with Ennis for Punisher Soviet (see “Garth Ennis Writing Two Punisher Series”).
