Fantagraphics Books' August releases will include a new graphic novel by Gilbert Hernandez that’s a mix of old and new stories.  Proof That the Devil Loves You is a collection of three stories about Fritz, the half-sister of his Love and Rockets character Luba, who is a B-movie actress.  The three stories are structured as Fritz’s movies; one is completely new and the other two originally appeared in Love and Rockets but Hernandez has reworked them.  The 96-page, black and white hardcover is scheduled for August 22, 2023, and will have an MSRP of $24.99.

Also in Fanta’s August catalog is Okinawa, by Susumu Higa, a collection of interwoven short stories that explore the history of the island, its traditional beliefs, and the changes that have been wrought by the U.S. military’s oversized presence there.  This volume was licensed by Mangasplaining and is being published in print in partnership with Fantagraphics (see “‘Mangasplaining’ Podcast Launches Manga Licensing Program”).  The 544-page, black and white hardcover will be published on August 22, 2023, with an MSRP of $29.99.

Disney brings ducks to literature in a volume by Giovan Battista Carpi that retells both Les Miserables, with Uncle Scrooge as the poor man who steals a loaf of bread, and War and Peace with Donald Duck as the dashing count and Uncle Scrooge as the prince who tries to force him into an arranged marriage.  Daisy Duck has major supporting roles in both books, as Daisette in Les Miz and Ducktasha in War and Peace.  The 184-page, full-color hardcover of Uncle Scrooge & Donald Duck in Les Miserables and War and Peace will be released on August 29, 2023, with an MSRP of $29.99.
