In an ICv2 exclusive, Ravensburger revealed new Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter Song cards as well as some of the finer points of the Song mechanics.
One of the flavor elements of the new Disney Lorcana are the Song mechanics. Over the decades, Walt Disney Studios has produced dozens of iconic songs for their feature length animated movies, many of which have earned them Oscars. The designers of Disney Lorcana attempted to capture that magic as part of their upcoming TCG.
Songs are a sub-type of action cards that have an alternative way of paying the Ink cost for them. Characters in play can actually to pay the cost by "singing" the song into play. To do this, the character must fulfill the required Ink cost (or exceed it) on the Song card and they can be exerted (a.k.a. "tap" or "turn sideways") to perform the Song. This still counts as playing a card, and it has the benefit of keeping the player's Inkwell reserves ready. Additionally, characters with the "singer" keyword can sing higher Ink cost Songs into play.
Song cards inherently allow players more play options for their characters during their turn beyond questing (gaining lore) and challenging other characters (duels). It essentially saves Ink cost, and some of the Song cards have ultra powerful effects. Two song cards noted by co-designer Steve Warner for this exclusive as being among their favorites were Be Prepared and A Whole New World. Be Prepared is more or less a Ruby Ink board wipe that can be played by high Ink cost characters (7 or more). It Banishes all characters on the board, and functions as a general reset for the board state.
A Whole New World is an extremely powerful card. This Steel Ink Song, that can be sung by character of cost 5 or more, lets each player discard their hand and draw seven cards. This allows players who burn through their hands quickly to refill by exerting a single character, leaving their Inkwell ready to drop new characters into play. If this Song card works anything like Wheel of Fortune did in the 1993 to 1995 era of Magic: The Gathering, it could be a game changer; especially for Steel Ink decks which seem to have a number direct damage Actions and characters with Challenger that have been spoiled thus far.
