Four creators who have been offering a “Comics Pro Boot Camp” as in-person and Zoom lessons are repackaging the material as workbooks that will walk the reader through writing, inking, penciling, and coloring a comic.  The workbooks will be crowdfunded via a Kickstarter campaign, which will have a retailer tier, and will also available to retail after the campaign ends.

Artist Ryan Benjamin teamed up with fellow creators Whilce Portacio, Carlos d’Anda, and Alex Sinclair for the program.  “We created this workshop to teach people how to produce professional‑quality comic books from start to finish,” Benjamin told ICv2 at an interview during San Diego Comic-Con.  “We're going to cover many different topics, any tricks that we have, that we've gone through throughout the years, we're going to cover it in this workbook.  We're going to show all the secrets on how to do everything from laying out pages to doing cross‑hatching to lighting.”

“Kickstarter is personally backing this series,” Benjamin said.  “They’re doing some heavy promotions at Comic-Con for this.”

In addition to advice from the four authors, the 100-page workbooks will include additional thoughts on writing by Kevin Grevioux and Marv Wolfman and material on penciling by YouTuber Stan Prokopenko and inking by Richard Friend, as well as contributions by others to be announced later.

The quartet will launch a Kickstarter in September for the four-book series, and they plan to crowdfund another four after that. Rocketship Entertainment will handle the Kickstarter and publish the books, which will also be available through regular trade channels when the Kickstarter has ended.

Benjamin is the artist for the board game Stan Lee’s Genesis (see “ICv2 Interview: Tom Akel and Ryan Benjamin”) as well as an artist for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Image Comics; his creator-owned webtoon, Brothers Bond, runs on the WEBTOON platform.
