Reversing the usual order of things, DC Comics will serialize two original graphic novels as single-issue comics. The first issue of Batman & Robin & Howard, by Jeffrey Brown, will be released on March 12, 2024, and the first issue of Primer, by writers Jennifer Muro and Thomas Krajewski and artist Gretel Lusky, is slated for March 26, 2024. Both first issues will be 40 pages and have an MSRP of $3.99.
Batman & Robin & Howard is a middle-grade graphic novel that was first published in 2021 (see “Top-Selling Creators on DC Graphic Novels”); Primer is YA and was published in 2020 (see “Preview: ‘Primer’ TP”).
While DC has published its newer young-readers titles as graphic novels, the single-issue format is not unprecedented. Superman Smashes the Klan, by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru, was first released as three 80-page perfect-bound comics before being collected into a graphic novel (see “CBLDF Offers Variants as Retailer Member Premiums”), and DC announced at Comic-Con in San Diego that the sequel to Batman & Robin & Howard, titled Batman & Robin & Howard: Summer Breakdown, will be published as a three-issue series (see “DC Young Readers”).
