Wizards of the Coast previewed Outlaws of Thunder Junction, a new booster set for Magic: The Gathering, which will hit retail on April 19, 2024.
The next Magic Standard set was teased at MagicCon Chicago at Wizards of the Coast's Preview Panel on Friday February 23, 2024 in front of a large gathering of fans. The new set, which was originally announced last year (see "2024 'Magic: The Gathering' Releases"), takes place in an American Western fantasy setting where gangs of outlaws roam the land. The center character of this set's storyline is the planeswalker Oko, who has come to this plane to pull of the heist of the century. There is a vault at the core of this plane that holds magical artifacts untold, and Oko and his gang are looking to “liberate” these treasures to use them for their own purposes.
One of the key mechanics introduced in this set are called Crimes. A player commits a Crime and triggers the Crime keyword by targeting their opponent or their opponent's permanents with a spell. Collectability-wise, the set has a series of Western-flavored card treatments, including Wanted Poster cards and Breaking News cards. There is also bonus sheet of reprint cards, much like Strixhaven's Mystical Archive, which features a Breaking News and Textured Foil reprint of Thoughtseize.
