Heritage Auctions is offering for sale the original cover art for New Mutants #98, the issue which introduced the Marvel Comics character of Deadpool. The asking price is $7.5 million. If the piece sells, that price would set a record for comic book art values.
The art was pencilled and inked by Rob Liefeld, co-creator of the character with writer Fabian Nicieza. New Mutants #98 was originally published in December 1990, in which Deadpool first appears trying to kill Cable. Liefeld has described the character as "Spider-Man, except with guns and swords."
The current owner, unidentified, has owned the piece for almost two decades but feels, given the success of the current Deadpool & Wolverine movie, that "the time is right" to sell it (see “‘Deadpool & Wolverine Passes $300 Million”).
