Showbiz news continued through the second holiday week, and we round it up here.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dropped to #2 at the weekend box office with a $21.2 million take, behind Mufasa's $24 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.  After wins its first two weekends (see "’Sonic 3’ Wins Again"), Sonic 3’s total gross rose to $187.5 million domestic and $336 million worldwide.  Nosferatu, Moana 2, and Wicked rounded out the top five for the weekend.  Kraven: The Hunter dropped out of the Top 10 with a $1.06 million weekend gross.  The film has now reached only $23.7 million domestic in its first four weekends.

Jason Momoa will play Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, according to Deadline.  He joins Milly Alcock (Princess Rhaenyra from House of the Dragon), who’s cast for the title role (see "Alcock is Supergirl").  Other cast members include Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hill and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle.  The film will be based on the 2022 comic series written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely.

Actor Angus MacInnes, who played Gold Leader/Jon "Dutch" Vander in Star Wars: A New Hope and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, passed away on December 23, according to a post by his family on Facebook.  He was 77.  The family included a special shout-out to Star Wars fans in their statement: "For Angus, the fans of Star Wars held a special place in his heart.  He loved meeting you at conventions, hearing your stories, and sharing in your passion for the saga. He was continually humbled, delighted, and honoured by the admiration and passion of the fans and convention community."

The 2024 U.S. box office finished the year at $8.7 billion, down 3.3% from $9.04 billion in 2023, according to Variety.  The domestic box office remains down dramatically, 23.5%, from before Covid, when the 2019 box office was $11.3 billion.  Not only is there still negative momentum from the pandemic years, 2024 was also affected by delayed productions due to the actors and writers strikes in 2023.  There’s hope that 2025 could make a big jump over 2024, with a full production year in the pipeline.

Horror producers Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are creating a new version of The Mummy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) is set to direct.  The last version of The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, disappointed when it was released in 2017 (see "’Wonder Woman’ Buries ‘The Mummy’").  This new version has been given a release date of April 17, 2026 (see "Movie Calendar – 2026").
