Wizards of the Coast updated their Banned and Restricted lists on March 31, 2025.

The new bans hit Modern as well as a couple Eternal formats.  They also unbanned a few cards in the Pauper format.  The changes to the formats are as follows:

  • Underworld Breach is banned in Modern.
  • Sowing Mycospawn and Troll of Khazad-dum are banned in Legacy.
  • Basking Broodscale, Kuldotha Rebirth, and Deadly Dispute are banned in Pauper.
  • Prophetic Prism and High Tide are unbanned in Pauper.

The most significant ban on this list was the banning of Underworld Breach, which had been wreaking havoc on Modern in Grinding Station decks since The One Ring got the ban hammer and Mox Opal came back (see "Bans Five 'Magic: The Gathering' Cards").  No one seemed to notice that Underworld Breach was just a more powerful version of Yawgmoth's Will (another mostly banned and restricted card) until Mox Opal was set free and a more resilient Grinding Station combo deck was born.

This card had already been banned in Pioneer and Legacy, so it was bound to be booted from Modern at some point.  The banning probably doesn't do too much to fix Modern's metagame issues at the moment, as Boros Energy and Amulet Titan will just roam free around the format without Breach decks or The One Ring around to put them in check.  However, when Tarkir: Dragonstorm comes out and the ridiculously powerful new Ugin card gets inserted into Eldrazi Ramp and Tron decks, things may shift a bit (see "'Magic: The Gathering - Tarkir: Dragonstorm' ").
