Andy Battaglia of Comics Etc. in Rochester, New York comments on Rob Salkowitz's recent column regarding the potential consequences of the minimum wage increase on small businesses (see "Beneath the Underdog: How a Well-Intentioned Policy Threatens Hobby Retailers").
I agree completely. Even without a large increase in minimum wage, other rising costs have eroded profits, while sales barely rise. On top of that, we have the two main publishers abandoning the "known," forcing retailers to play guessing games on unproven and often, suspect quality comics. It's become a much more difficult business, and retailers are carrying a workload like never before, and unless this new boom in the industry actually turns out to be long term sales, I think many retailers will fail. I think many store owners will take a long hard look at the time and effort compared to the return, and see no choice but to look for a new career.
