Numerous friends of famed comic artist Nick Cardy, including George Perez, have passed on the news via social media that Cardy passed away Sunday night at the age of 93. He was best known for his work at DC, where he worked on the first 39 issues of Aquaman, all 43 issues of Teen Titans, all the issues of the short-lived Bat Lash, and was the primary DC cover artist from the early to the mid-1970s.
Cardy (nee Nicholas Viscardi) worked in comics, with an interruption for military service from 1943 to 1945, from 1939 to the mid-1970s. He joined the Eisner & Iger studio in 1939 and worked on several Fiction House titles, as well as the Lady Luck back-up feature in the Spirit Sections. Cardy also worked on several comic strips, including Burne Hogarth’s Tarzan, Warren Tufts’ Casey Ruggles, and Al Plastino’s Batman.
Cardy was admitted to the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2005 (see "17th Annual Eisner Awards").
He finished his career as an illustrator (as Nick Cardi) from the mid-1970s on, including advertising art for films such as The Street Fighter, California Suite, Movie Movie, and Apocalypse Now.
