The collection accumulated by Don and Maggie Thompson, who edited the Comics Buyers Guide for decades, is hitting the market via a series of Heritage Auctions expected to bring over $1 million. The first items are being sold this week. As a significant collection, it’s acquired a monicker: The Don and Maggie Thompson Pedigree Collection.
Key comics in the collection include a CGC 9.4 copy of Avengers #1 (which closed at $89,000), a CGC 9.2 copy of Journey into Mystery #83, and a CGC 8.5 copy of Incredible Hulk #1.
Original art includes the Barry Smith cover for Conan the Barbarian #4, a Frazetta painting, Charles Shultz Peanuts originals, Kirby and Sinott art from Fantastic Four #55, and the Carl Barks cover for Uncle Scrooge #43.
Maggie Thompson (her husband Don died in the mid-90s) is acquiring lower grade copies of the books she’s selling, so she can still read them when she wishes. As she put it on her blog, "[M]y collecting began so that I could have what I want when I want it."
