White Wolf announced that its Sword & Sorcery Studios has acquired the rights to publish the Gamma World campaign setting from Wizards of the Coast.  The first release, the Gamma World Player's Handbook, is planned as a d20 release for summer of 2003, with supplements planned for later in the year.  The new game line will be designed by White Wolf writer/editor Bruce Baugh.  According to the announcement, the new release 'completely reinterprets the classic sci-fi setting from the ground up,' incorporating new concepts from such fields as as genetic research, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence.

Gamma World is a post-apocalyptic science fiction world originally created by TSR and acquired by Wizards of the Coast.  WotC last published Gamma World as part of its Alternity science fiction line in 2000, and withdrew support for the line after the release of D&D3E and the creation of the d20 rules system.

This continues two pre-existing trends.  First, White Wolf continues to expand its d20 lines, and does another licensed world from WotC (see 'White Wolf Mounts d20 Offensive').  And second, Wizards of the Coast continues to get rid of non-core businesses in a variety of ways.
