Peter Berg's Battleship is one of this summer's biggest cinematic gambles, a $200 million blockbuster based on a kids' board game.  Actually the ties between this movie and the Hasbro game that supposedly inspired it are rather tentative--it appears that Berg has made another big budget alien invasion film, a movie that could potentially earn the film some solid box office numbers, especially given the comforting presence of Liam Neeson as the admiral along with Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna, who should provide the requisite eye candy for the groundlings.  As for the film's ostensible star, Taylor Kitsch--well he didn't help John Carter that much, and the possibility remains that he could end up starring in the two biggest bombs of 2012.

But judging from this clip at least, the decision to make Battleship an alien invasion film makes good use of modern special effects technology, and at least provides the possibility of an Independence Day-like success. Universal explained the film’s backstory in a previously-released clip (see “Battleship Featurette”), and the studio has produced no fewer than three trailers for the film (see “Third Battleship Trailer”).
