AEG has announced plans to release a Lovecraftian horror themed expansion to its hit card game Smash Up in September.  The Obligatory Cthulhu Expansion introduces a new "madness" mechanic to the "shuffle-building" game.
 
The new expansion features familiar themes and groups from the Cthulhu Mythos, including Cthulhu cultists, the fish-men of Innsmouth, Elder Things, and Miskatonic University.  Each of these factions can take advantage of the new “madness” card type… at a price.
 
Each faction is made up of 20 cards.  In addition, eight new bases and 30 madness cards are included, along with VP tokens and game rules.  The suggested retail price for the expansion will be $19.99.
 
Smash Up uses improbable combinations of factions to “smash” bases (see "AEG Preps Shuffle-Building Card Game, 'Smash Up'”).  It just made it into ICv2’s top ten list for Fall, 2012 (see "Top 10 Card/Building Games--Fall 2012"), and was recently nominated for an Origins Award (see "Origins Nominations Announced").
