According to today's Hollywood Reporter Davis Films is preparing a $50 million live action film based on Capcom's Onimusha video game. Set in sixteenth century Japan, Onimusha features a young warrior who must battle against demons used by evil warlords to keep his region under a cruel and despotic rule. With its mesmerizing combination of swordplay and black magic, Onimusha has become a huge hit. The PS2 version of Onimusha has sold more than 4 million units, and a new installment is due out soon. Davis Films producer Samuel Hadida believes that Onimusha could develop into a powerful franchise on the silver screen as well.
For pop culture retailers Onimusha is a property with definite potential. McFarlane Toy's excellent series of Onimusha action figures demonstrated some of the potential of this property. A live action film, if it gets made, can only extend the influence of this 'samurai versus demons' property.
