New Line Home Entertainment has announced a third DVD version of Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, which was previously released in both no-frills and 'extended' editions.  The new 2-disk Limited Edition versions, which will debut in August and have an MSRP of $29.98 each, will include both the theatrical version of the film and its extended edition on one disk plus a second disk containing a feature length, never-before-seen documentary by Costa Botes.  The documentaries include more than 300 minutes of previously unavailable footage focusing on the complexities Jackson faced while putting together the epic trilogy, which garnered a total of 17 Academy Awards.

All three films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King will be released together on August 29th.  Fans of the LOTR trilogy are extremely devoted (many went so far as to learn 'Elvish'), and it appears that New Line is providing yet another test of their devotion.  While the release of the Limited Editions may seem a bit premature (couldn't they have waited for a 10th Anniversary?), one must remember that high definition editions of the trilogy are waiting in the wings (see 'Genre Titles Among First Hi-Def Releases')
