That’s a lot, especially compared to a year ago, when there were only two in the top 20 (see "September 2023 Circana BookScan"). What’s more, fans are opting for the higher-priced books over cheaper paperbacks. Both MrBallen Presents and Vol. 7 of Lore Olympus are new releases available both in hardcover and paperback, but only the hardcover makes the Top 20. And while the deluxe editions of Berserk and Trigun are fatter and nicer than the paperbacks, Dark Horse Comics does make them available in both formats.
This month’s chart features a number of interesting items. MrBallen Presents is a hardcover based on a horror podcast (see "ICv2 Gifts Week"), which is an unusual but not unheard-of source for a graphic novel.
Vol. 1 of Under the Oak Tree kicks off a new manhwa that was serialized on Manta, the only webtoon platform that runs on a full subscription model (see "ICv2 Interview: Manta CEO Travis Kim"). The series is one of the most popular on the platform, and the fact that this book is in the Top 20 indicates that free-to-read isn’t the only successful model for webtoons.
The Square Enix manga The Apothecary Diaries makes its Top 20 debut; this series has gotten a huge boost from the anime, which premiered earlier this year, and Circana Senior Executive Director Kristen McLean named it one of the fastest growing manga of 2024 in a recent ComicsPRO presentation (see "ComicsPRO: Book Channel Trends Offer Insights for Retailers"). Vol. 11 of Kaiju No. 8, another series that has gotten a big boost from anime, debuts at number 10 on the chart.
Jonathan Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man is at number 19; this is the first time in four years that a Marvel Comics graphic novel has made the Adult Top 20, although Marvel-licensed titles such as Alex Ross’s Fantastic Four: Full Circle and the Marvel manga published by VIZ Media have charted from time to time.
There are no DC Compact Comics on the September chart, although six of them appeared in the ComicHub September Top 20 (see "Top 20 Graphic Novels—September 2024").
