A primary theme of the article was the director's intention to create work for mainstream audiences, and the anime tradition of directing work to adults. Kon contrasted Paprika with a Disney film. 'When you see a Disney cartoon, you're in a dream world of sweet animals and pretty flowers,' he said. 'The dream world in Paprika is quite the opposite -- frightening and horrible, a surprising notion coming from a cartoon.'
