Mark Millar’s new Image Comic book series, MPH, was optioned for the movies even before the book’s first issue is slated to hit stores on May 21. Announced last summer at Image Expo (see "Image Announces Major Projects at Expo"), MPH, which features art by Duncan Fegredo, follows the short, fast careers of four street 19-year-old have-nots from Detroit who obtain a street drug that allows them to move at light speed for seven days.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura plans to bring a screenwriter on board and prepare a treatment before shopping the project to studios. Di Bonaventura has lots of experience getting comic book movies made in Hollywood. While at Warner Bros., di Bonaventura was instrumental in hiring Christopher Nolan to direct the Batman movies, and of course he has produced the Transformers movies among numerous other pop culture-friendly films.
Millar, whose comic book Superior was optioned by Fox last week (see "Movie Deal for Millar's 'Superior'"), has had considerable success getting his films adapted for the big screen starting with his Top Cow project Wanted that was adapted in 2008 by Universal. Millar’s Kick-Ass has spawned two feature films, and his The Secret Service, which is being directed by Matthew Vaughn (who helmed the first Kick-Ass movie), is slated to be released on October 24, 2014.
