Legendary Entertainment has announced Tom Hiddleston will star in its film based on the cinematic origins of King Kong.  The British actor is best known for his show-stealing turn as Loki in the Marvel Studios Thor and Avengers films.

The studio also announced Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Seventh Son) as scriptwriter and Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer) to direct.  The press release seemed keen on emphasizing Hiddleston’s non-superhero credits (Midnight in Paris, Only Lovers Left Alive, War Horse).  The plot details are still thin, with emphasis on exploring the mysterious and dangerous island that is home to the famous giant gorilla.

The company announced plans for the movie at San Diego Comic-Con (see "'Skull Island'"), and set a release date of November 4, 2016, with Universal Pictures to distribute.
