Mayfair Games has shared more details about the box contents for its upcoming summer release of Catan Traveler. ICv2 had an opportunity to preview the game at the New York Toy Fair in February, when Mayfair’s Bob Carty shared the company’s initial plans (see “‘Catan Traveler Edition’”).
This “Compact Edition” of the game is designed for ease of transport. The folding plastic box measures 11.5” x 6” x 1.75”- about half the size of a regular copy of Catan - and includes built-in locking drawers to hold the game’s playing pieces: 97 plastic peg-like roads, settlements, and cities. Two plastic card holders and a hexagonal dice-shaker are included to help prevent players from dropping the two dice and 134 game cards. The game board is divided into six double-sided plastic pieces, which can be arranged in hundreds of different ways for game play variety. The rulebook also includes special rules for playing the game with only two players. This version of the perennial best-seller is based on Klaus Teuber’s original award-winning design, and includes additional work by Michaela Kienle, with 3D graphics by Andreas Reich and new art by Michael Menzel, who also contributed to Catan’s “new look” (see “‘Catan’s’ New Look”). The game is being manufactured in Germany. MSRP is $45.00.
Due to material differences, this edition will not be compatible with any of the other products in the Catan line.
