Adult Swim and Japanese animation studio Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell) will produce a new FLCL anime series, which will air in the U.S. on Adult Swim’s Toonami block. Two six episode seasons are planned, to begin airing in late 2017/early 2018, according to the announcement.
The creative team will bring back series creator Kazuya Tsurumaki, who will supervise the production. Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass) will direct; Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion) will be character designer; and Hideto Iwai (Last Dinner) will write.
The story will be set many years after the events in the original series. It will star a young teenaged girl whose new teacher is Haruhara Haruko, from the original series. Medical Mechanica attacks the town and the girl discovers a secret that could save the everyone, but only Haruko can unlock it.
The original anime series consisted of six OAVs co-produced by Production I.G. and Studio Gainax, which aired on Adult Swim beginning in 2003 (see “Adult Swim’s November Schedule”), and was re-aired numerous times (for example, in 2008, see “Adult Swim Increases Anime Programming”). The series was released in the U.S. on Blu-ray in 2011 (see “Fooly Cooly Blu-ray”).
Tokyopop had the manga (adapted from the anime) in the 00s, and Dark Horse issued an omnibus collection in 2012 (see “Dark Horse’s Carl Horn on the Manga Market”).
