ADV Films announced the acquisition of North American rights to 2002 Annecy International Animated Film Festival 'Best Feature' winner My Beautiful Girl, Mari. ADV is planning a limited theatrical release for the Korean animated feature for 2004, followed by an Anime Network broadcast debut and DVD/home Video release.
Directed by Lee-Sung Kang and animated largely with digital techniques, My Beautiful Girl, Mari is considered to be one of the finest works of animation to come out of Korea. The animation style is very different from both American animated features and Japanese anime, and the 'symbolic magical realism' elements in the feature could potentially be a flag-bearer for often underrated Korean animation.
My Beautiful Girl, Mari is the story of Nam-woo, a boy who escapes his difficulties through an elaborate fantasy about a young girl named Mari.
