The Toronto Comics Arts Festival, presented by Toronto Public Library and The Beguiling Books & Art, will take over the operations of the previously unrelated Vancouver Comic Arts Festival effective immediately. Andrea Demonakos, formerly of Emerald City Comicon and ReedPOP, will take over as Festival Director as VanCAF founder Shannon Campbell steps back to the Board of Directors as an advisor. The rest of the board will consist of TCAF’s Miles Baker and Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, comic creator Nathan Fairbairn, and musician/visual artist Jarrett Simpson.
TCAF Festival Director Christopher Butcher explained the transition. "When I heard Shannon was ready to move on from the event she created, I was a little worried that meant the end of VanCAF," he said. "It is my belief that Canada needs a strong and vibrant comics community coast to coast, and that was why it was so important for us to join with Andrea and step up to make sure VanCAF will be around for years to come in support of the west coast comics community."
TCAF hosted 25,000 attendees at its 2016 show; VanCAF had 10,300 attendees.
Both VanCAF and TCAF have their next shows scheduled for May 2017.
