ICv2 has confirmed that Funimation is set to release the first volume of the 26-episode Tenchi GXP: Galaxy Police Transporter series on March 10, 2004. While Tenchi GXP is set in the 'Tenchi Universe' and is, like the Tenchi OAV series it spun off from, a romantic science fiction comedy, it does not feature Tenchi himself or many of the other characters from the various Tenchi series, though some of the key Tenchi characters are mentioned in the dialog. The hero of Tenchi GXP is Seina Yamada, a classmate/friend of Tenchi's. Seina is burdened with incredible bad luck, though he thinks that a visit from two sexy representatives of the Galaxy Police, Kiriko and Amane, which starts out as a near-death experience, is pretty cool since they invite him to join the Galaxy Police and allow him to travel across the universe.
With tons of slapstick humor, much of which revolves around Seina's incredible bad luck, and lots of fan service thanks to the gorgeous Kiriko and Amane and their skin tight uniforms, this is a series that should have a strong appeal to Tenchi fans -- as long as they can get over the fact that it is about Seina, and not Tenchi. Japanese fans certainly enjoyed the series, which was directed by the very talented Shinichi Watanabe (Excel Saga) and quickly became a Top 10 Anime DVD in Japan. The first volume in the series Tenchi GXP: Out of This World will be available as a DVD only ($24.98) and also in a collector's edition which also includes a box to hold the entire 26-episode, 8-volume series and a Tenchi GXP calendar ($34.98).
