Thunderworks Games has announced plans for a new expansion for its dice game Roll Player called Monsters & Minions, scheduled for release in February.

Roll Player:  Monsters & Minions Expansion adds a number of new features to the game.  The focus is the introduction of the titular Monsters and Minions, giving the heroes created something to test their mettle against.  As the heroes gain skills and gear, they can hunt Minions to earn honor and experience, as well as clues about the powerful Monster that they must battle at the end of the game.

The expansion adds an additional player, along with new weapons, skills, and traits, new character classes and races, and new boost dice with higher values.  The set includes 43 dice, 55 tokens, 30 cubes, 4 character sheets, and 168 cards.  Added to the base game, it supports 1 to 5 players, ages 10 and up, and takes 1 to 2 hours to play.  MSRP is $49.95.

Thunderworks is funding the new expansion through a Kickstarter campaign which achieved its funding goals in less than three hours.  With 14 days remaining, the campaign has attracted more than $220,000 in pledges from over 3,000 backers. A retailer level is availible.

Released last autumn, Roll Player is a dice drafting game about creating heroes and preparing them for their epic quests.  Using dice and cards, the heroes are given skills, weapons, and armor.  The player with the most epic hero when their training is complete wins the game.  The game was created by Keith Matejka, founder of the Madison, WI based Thunderworks Games, who also designed Bullfrogs (see “Renegade Games Announces Three Spring Releases”) and co-designed Herbaceous.  It quickly sold through two 4,000-piece print runs last year, and a second reprint will release in July.  MSRP is $59.95.
