Free Comic Book Day drove record web traffic to the FCBD website, Diamond Comic Distributors revealed, with 118,000 visitors on the day of the event, over 20% more than the previous high. The web traffic was reflective of a number of other milestones, including coverage by over 700 broadcast TV stations and several thousand news outlets, and thousands of tweets, which led the event to trend as #2 nationally on Twitter.
An estimated 1.35 million fans visited comic shops on Free Comic Book Day, with 92% of retailers feeling the event was "positive" or "extremely positive" for their stores, according to a Diamond survey. Around 58% of responding retailers said FCBD was their highest sales day of the year.
Over 5.2 million comics were given away at over 2200 participating stores worldwide. That number is not a record; over 6 million comics were given away in 2016, the 15th anniversary event.
