The Metal Men are back with a new solo series, to be written by DC publisher Dan DiDio, with art by Shane Davis and Michelle Delecki. The 12-issue maxi-series, simply titled Metal Men, will tie in with the events of Dark Knights: Metal and will also hark back to the science-fiction roots of the super-team. The first issue is due out in October 2019, with a main cover by Davis and a variant cover by Philip Tan.
In their first appearance, in DC’s Showcase #37 (1962), the Metal Men were robots created by Dr. Will Magnus, each embodying the characteristics of their particular metal: Gold, Iron, Tin, Lead, Platinum, and Mercury. The first Metal Men series ran from 1963 to 1969, and the characters reappeared over the decades in limited series and as characters in other series.
In Metal Men #1, the Metal Men find a cache of discarded robots that turn out to be earlier versions of themselves tossed aside by Magnus after their various adventures. Simultaneously, a previously unseen liquid Nth metal appears at the science site at Challenger Mountain, which figured prominently in Dark Knights: Metal and the miniseries New Challengers.
“I’m a longtime fan of the Metal Men and had a chance to write them briefly in the anthology, Wednesday Comics, several years ago,” DiDio said. “With this new series, we explore the essence of what makes the Metal Men human, by having them caught between Doc Magnus, the man who created them, and the newly introduced The Nth Metal Man, the being that gave them life. What I’m enjoying most about this book is the chance to stay true to all existing stories, while building out their mythology in exciting new directions.”
