Dark Horse Comics announced during Comic-Con International at San Diego that it will publish an anthology of EC comics to celebrate that publisher’s 75th anniversary.

Choke Gasp! The Best of 75 Years of EC Comics is planned as a 528-page, full-color hardcover volume with an MSRP of $49.99.  The release date is December 4, 2019.

The book will collect work by Al Feldstein, Bernie Krigstein, Harvey Kurzman, Jack Davis, Wally Wood, and other EC luminaries, with stories drawn from classic EC series such as Two-Fisted Tales, Crime SuspenStories, and Tales from the Crypt.

EC was founded in 1944 by Max Gaines as a publisher of educational comics for children.  After Gaines’s death in a boating accident, his son William took over and radically changed the publisher’s mission, moving into adult-oriented genre stories. While best known for its horror titles (which became a staple of the comics scare campaigns of the 1950s), EC also produced science fiction, war stories, westerns, and other genres, often with socially progressive themes.  The company stopped publishing comics in 1956 but continued to produce MAD Magazine.

Dark Horse has been publishing the EC Comics archives since 2013 (see "Dark Horse Gets EC Comics Library"); previously, Gemstone Publishing had been issuing collected editions. Fantagraphics Books, IDW Publishing, and of course, Russ Cochran, have also published reprints of EC Comics.
