Heritage Auctions just dropped the hammer at $168,000, with buyer's premium included, on Douglas Shuler's Demonic Tutor original artwork for Magic: The Gathering's Alpha edition.

This iconic piece of Magic: The Gathering original art realized six figures, which sets a bar for original Alpha artwork. These are the first pieces of Alpha art to come to auction, and this piece sets a precedence for where to expect future sales to land for truly iconic pieces. Other pieces of original art sold in this auction were the late Christopher Rush's Mana Flare (see "RIP Christopher Rush") for $78,000, Mark Poole's Fear for $45,600, Douglas Shuler's Contract From Below for $78,000, and Mark Tedin's Jayemdae Tome for $114,000.

This auction was first announced back in October (see "Douglas Shuler's 'Demonic Tutor' 'Magic: The Gathering' Artwork Is Headed to The Heritage Auction Block").
