Dark Horse Comics and Netflix have extended their first look deal, a multi-year agreement that allows Netflix the first look at Dark Horse’s IP for adaptation to movies and TV. The original deal was finalized in 2019 (see “Dark Horse Signs ‘First Look’ Deal with Netflix”) and grew out of the two parties’ successful collaboration on The Umbrella Academy.

That collaboration is still going: Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy premiered on June 22 (see “‘Umbrella Academy’ S3 Trailers”), and the show made the Netflix TV Top 10 in 91 countries in its first four weeks of release. Other properties resulting from the collaboration include the film Polar, starring Mads Mikkelsen (see “‘Polar’ Trailer”); the animated series Samurai Rabbit: The Usagi Chronicles (see “Netflix Drops Two Comic-Based Series”); and the animated film Chickenhare and the Hamster of Darkness.

Dark Horse projects in active development now include Bang!, a feature film adaptation of the series by Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres, starring Idris Elba and directed by David Leitch (Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2), and Mind MGMT, a series adaptation of another comic by Kindt, with Executive Producer Curtis Gwinn (Stranger Things).
