Eisner created The Spirit as the centerpiece of a new Sunday comics supplement that ran from 1940 to 1952. Other collected editions have been published over the years (see “DC Retains the Rights to ‘The Spirit’ Archives”), and the character has been rebooted several times, most recently by Dynamite Entertainment (see “‘The Spirit’ by Matt Wagner”).

IDW Publishing will publish Will Eisner’s The Spirit Artisan Edition, giving the classic comics a new, deluxe treatment. The Artisan Edition is shot in color directly from the original art, so even though the stories were drawn in black and white, the reader can see all the corrections and notes on the page. The 144-page paperback will include 17 Spirit stories published between 1946 and 1950 and will be available on April 18, 2023, with an MSRP of $39.99.
