Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura, who teamed up for the Eisner Award-nominated I Kill Giants, are back together again for a new series, Immortal Sergeant. Image Comics will launch the nine-issue limited series in January 2023.
The story follows an aging detective, Jim “Sarge” Sargent, who is about to be put out to pasture when he gets a lead on a decades-old murder case. He has to swing into action immediately, and that means bringing his anxiety-ridden adult son along as he pursues the killer. The story hinges on whether father and son, each with his own issues, can work together to collar the murderer.
Kelley is one of the members of the creator group Man of Action Studios, and his work includes runs on Deadpool, Uncanny X-Men, and Savage Spider-Man (see “Joe Kelly Returns with ‘Savage Spider-Man’ in January”). Niimura won a 2019 Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic for Umami and is also the creator of the graphic novel Don’t Open It (see “Manga Gift Guide 2021”).
