Marvel will launch a new Captain Marvel series in October 2023, and the character will get a makeover by Eisner Award-winning artist Jen Bartel. The new series, which will start again with Captain Marvel #1, will be written by Alyssa Wong, with art by Marvel Stormbreaker Jan Bazaldua. The first issue will go on sale on October 25, 2023, with a cover by Steven Segovia.

In the new series, Carol is waylaid by an “omniversal entity” who sees her as the chief obstacle to its apocalyptic plans, and she forms a new alliance in order to overcome it. The story will feature a mix of old and new villains as well as a new cast of allies and supporters.

The announcement of the new series comes the same week as the final issue of writer Kelly Thompson’s Captain Marvel run (see “New ‘Captain Marvel’ Series Launches in 2019”). Wong is the writer of the Marvel webtoon Alligator Loki (see “Confessions of a Comic Book Guy”) and the limited series Spirit World (see “Three New DC Series Based on Lazarus Planet”). As a Stormbreaker, Bazaldua is a frequent cover artist for Marvel (see “Preview: Marvel’s ‘Stormbreakers’ X-Men 60th Anniversary Variant Covers”). Bartel won a 2022 Eisner Award as Best Cover Artist and is nominated for the same award in the 2023 Eisners.
