Just over a year after it looked like William Messner-Loebs had finally found a home, the veteran writer and artist is being threatened with eviction.  Writer Clifford Meth has set up a GoFundMe to help Messner-Loebs and his wife with their legal and medical bills.

Messner-Loebs, who is 74 and has a number of medical conditions, moved to an assisted-living facility in 2022 with help from the Hero Initiative (see “William Messner-Loebs Is Home at Last”).  However, as he detailed in a post on his Facebook, shortly after he returned home from a hospital stay, his landlord informed him that he would be evicted from his independent living community.

During his 45-year career in comics, Messner-Loebs has written numerous series including Wonder Woman, Hawkman, and Thor.  He also wrote The Flash from 1988 to 1992 (issues #15-61), a span that included the revelation that the Pied Piper was gay, making him one of the first recurring gay characters in a DC comic.  DC included that issue in DC Pride: Through the Years #1, published in June 2023 as one of its Pride Month collections (see “DC Pride Month to Include Collection of Out-of-Print LGBTQ+ Comics”).
