Digital comics news was flowing at New York Comic Con and since, and we round it up here.
The digital comics platform GlobalComix, which raised $6.5 million in venture capital funding earlier this year (see “GlobalComix Raises $6.5 Million”), has released its first comics apps for iOS and Android phones and tablets. The platform runs on a subscription model and offers over 45,000 titles from Image, BOOM! Studios, and other publishers. The app allows users to search across various criteria including genres, themes, and art style, and to read comics in vertical-scroll, single-page, or double-page formats. In other digital comics news, the subscription webtoon platform Manta announced the appointment of Travis Kim as its CEO, a newly created position within the company. Kim will report directly to Kisik Bae, the founder of Manta’s parent company, RIDI Corporation. He has an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and he comes to Manta from the Korean startup CLASS101, where he was Chief Product Officer. Unlike most webtoon platforms, Manta uses a subscription model (see “ICv2 Interview: Moonseok Jeong, Manta COO & Head of Content”) Mantahas also announced it will publish Dragon King Oath, a new series by Leeanne M. Krecic, a.k.a. Mongie. Krecic’s webtoon Let’s Play had over 4.8 million subscribers on the Webtoon platform, but she left the platform after expressing “ongoing difficulties” with the management (see “Top Comic on Webtoon Won’t Return for a New Season”). “In Manta, I've found more than just a digital comics platform; I've found a committed team that listens, collaborates, and celebrates shared goals,” Krecic said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “As we forge ahead, I'm reminded of the ever-supportive community that has enjoyed my work and celebrated each milestone with me. I'm eager for everyone to see what's next.”Click on Gallery below for Dragon King Oath design images!
