Dark Horse Comics is partnering with Webtoon to put the entire run of Avatar: The Last Airbender comics online on the Webtoon platform. The first three chapters were posted on March 22, 2024, and racked up 1.5 million views and almost 500,000 subscribers in the first five days.
The move comes just a month after the live-action Avatar series premiered on Netflix (see “‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’”). While major publishers including Marvel Comics, DC Comics, and Archie have created vertical-scroll comics with their characters, this may be the first time a best-selling existing series has been reformatted in this way.
Dark Horse began publishing original Avatar graphic novels in 2012, with a storyline that picked up where the Nickelodeon series left off. They have been consistent best-sellers (see “Top Kids Graphic Novel Franchises – Fall 2022”), with six of them making the ComicHub list of the best-selling kids’ graphic novels in comic shops in 2022 (see “Top 20 Kids Graphic Novels – Full Year 2022”).
