Told in different formats, including prose and comics, Thompson's stories are lighthearted Halloween tales about a red-headed fairy-witch who befriends a group of children and introduces them to the real monsters behind Halloween, who turn out not to be so scary after all.
Sirius Entertainment published Scary Godmother from 1997 to 2004 in a mix of formats, including children's books, comics, and trades. Dark Horse published two collections and an omnibus in 2010-2020.
Mainframe Entertainment made two animated films based on the stories (see "'Scary Godmother: The Revenge of Jimmy'").
